editsweb - DEKRA Automobil
In this project the entire documentation portfolio of the DEKRA Automobil GmbH, which had already been created with EDITS, ought to be migrated to the new comm.editsweb. In addition, full system functionality with bidirectional partial content synchronization should be available in disconnected mode thanks to the offline client of comm.editsweb.

Challenge
With more than one hundred subsidiaries and affiliates the DEKRA AG, a specialist for modern vocational and further training methodology, covers a wide range of topics for all branches and individual learning needs of its clients. Thanks to flexible education systems which combine individual seminar units, not only officially recognized internal experts and test engineers acquire basic skills in vehicle monitoring but also external ones.
The old EDITS version of VW Coaching has already been used by DEKRA's in-house training center. After porting EDITS to the integration platform open-EIS, the DEKRA Automobil GmbH also switched to the new web-based comm.editsweb. The challenge was not only the legacy data migration but also the offline client connection with partial synchronization.
Solution
By using EDITS, the entire DEKRA Automobil GmbH documentation portfolio existed as an Access database which contains the connections between the various Word and PowerPoint modules according to the well-maintained structures as well as the assignment of these modules to the configured templates. For the legacy data migration a special import was developed. Not only the old Access database got switched to the new data model but also a mapping of the templates as well as the transfer of former permissions to open-EIS were provided.
By using the offline client, a targeted and secure access to the entire documentation portfolio was effected, irrespective of an internet access. Especially for the DEKRA Automobil GmbH a partial synchronization for the offline client was developed due to the huge documentation portfolio. The user can choose which contents are needed for offline editing according to access permissions. This reduces the data transfer and needed disk space at the client when synchronizing, because not all content changes must be replicated and stored but only those of the partitions which the user has included in its own synchronization.
