Digitization and apps - community4you AG in the expert panel of a fleet magazine
bfp fuhrpark + management": the independent trade magazine for fleet managers invited for an interview to the topic "Apps are on the rise: in fleets too?
The transition to industry 4.0 also affects the logistics and fleet industry. Wolfgang Schaeffer et al. editor of the trade magazine "bfp fuhrpark + management" and community4you AG’s board of directors discussed current questions, especially on the subject of "Are apps also on the advance in the vehicle fleet".
Wolfgang Schaeffer | Without apps for smartphones, the digital world is inconceivable. But how widespread are applications in fleet management now?
Apps have become widespread in recent years. So why should they not also facilitate fleet management? There are different developers, service providers and also manufacturers who want to use special apps to make the performance of fleet managers more masterful and the day-to-day work of drivers easier.

Who has access?
In combination with the fleet management software comm.fleet and the leasing management software comm.lease, community4you AG in Chemnitz offers comm.mobile, a mobile fleet and leasing portal to use anywhere and anytime. "Access by different user groups - employees, customers, partners, sales staff and service providers - can be personalised safely and efficiently thanks to uniform user administration and authentication," president Uwe Bauch added.
The applications can be used on all supported devices - smartphone, tablet, notebook, PC. comm.mobile has numerous apps for mobile fleet management: disposition, car configurator, claims management, reporting and online driver and customer portal.

What does the future hold?
Board member Janko Nebel explains: "We see the future in hybrid applications with the decisive advantage that about 90 percent of the code can be developed platform-independently and therefore cost-saving as an HTML5 web-app". A further advantage of the hybrid approach is the consistency of the user interface on different platforms while maintaining the manufacturer's design guidelines as well as the parallel adaptation of user interfaces to personal or customer-specific requirements.
"In the future, mobile applications will evolve into progressive web apps that are characterised by the fact that all existing possibilities with HTML5 will be exploited in order to guarantee customers maximum flexibility and user-friendliness," says the other board member Lavinio Cerquetti. This starts with the possibility of loading dynamically or modifying program codes during the runtime of the app via secure connections and extends to the use of localisation and messaging components and the offline capability of the app. "For the user, it is then no longer apparent that he is using a web app, as it works even in the absence of or with a poor network connection."

Apps offer maximum flexibility
Currently, 62 percent of comm.fleet customers use the app-based fleet and leasing portal comm.mobile for mobile use. Since the introduction of the product, this proportion has steadily increased. "We forecast further growth for the future, as using mobile apps ensures maximum flexibility. The majority of our customers consist of large and partly internationally operating companies who use our mobile application portal with all its application possibilities. But even smaller companies or companies with smaller fleets use it, sometimes with a different range of applications," highlighted Uwe Bauch. "Our software products adapt to a wide variety of structures and industries and are modular and extendable. Regardless of the type and size, every vehicle fleet can be managed."
